Directly engaging your own NDIS staff

If you have self-managed NDIS funding, you can directly employ staff. Giving you the ultimate control over the people who work with you, the hours they work and the tasks that they perform.

As a self-managed participant, you can use any provider whether they are NDIS registered or not.

As an employer you will need to:

  • make sure your staff have the right skills, qualifications, training and safety checks,
  • use your plan budget to meet the costs to recruit staff, pay their wages, superannuation and any insurances,
  • and provide a safe place for them to work and ensure their health and safety while working.

If you employ your own staff, you need to keep payroll records for your claims in line with your state or territory’s requirements. Records include pay slips, bank statements, payment of taxes and superannuation.

You’ll need to keep records for 5 to 7 years.

Depending on the role usually the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award or Miscellaneous Award will apply.
